artist statementIn January 2015 Rosie Batty was named Australian of the Year for overcoming the horrific event of her cherished son being brutally murdered by her estranged husband in public. Since then she has sought to raise the profile of domestic violence in Australian society and create a discussion to shape people's opinions to create change and protection for women and children who are abused in domestic situations. Since this time we are greeted almost weekly with new incidences of 'otherwise doting partners' who choose to murder their spouse or kill their children and sometimes themselves.
As a child my favourite picture book was 'A Lion in the Meadow'. The illustrations of fields of yellow grasses growing in the sun for as far as the eye could see resonated. I have used this imagery and replaced it with a field of blood red flowers to represent the numerous lives cut short as a result of domestic violence in this country. NB. I have and will continue to add panels to this work as this endemic issue continues within our society. |
