works on diverse surfaces - exploring stitch

artist statement She is painted on transparent plastic - naked, exposed, vulnerable and proud - her potential before her. Filled with the expectation of what tomorrow may bring. Words matter. Words are written in lead - they can be erased, re-written. She has the power to exist, to change and to exceed their expectations of her. Words matter but only if you believe them. Stitched in white - she is tethered to this political environment where men control the conversation. But as she grows and time passes it changes to pink. She questions what is being told to her until the stitch that holds her to their thoughts and beliefs breaks and only holes remain. She begins her own path. In this work the stitching ends, the holes are left where the thread of ideas and thoughts sprouted by white men in suits also end. She doesn't need to listen to their meaningless drivel any longer. At first she is tethered to their beliefs and the systems that control her, but as her confidence grows she is awakened and free to escape. Her future is unwritten... Feminism is not about making women strong. Women are already strong. Feminism is about giving women choice and supporting those choices even if we wouldn't make them for ourselves. 2019 maunsell wickes gallery, paddington NSW 2021 art@work exhibition, central coast NSW |
