ceramic and newspaper coiled vessels
'Yesterday's News' consists of a series of small sculptural ceramic-based vessels. Cordage made from newspaper is used in the construction of the basket-woven tops. Coloured cotton-thread is used to stitch the coiled basket forms. Different heights and shaped domes are featured in this series of contemporary vessels.
These small sculptures combine my love of ceramics and the functional associations of the medium with the methodical slow stitching that occurs from basketry. I enjoy taking something from the everyday and transforming it into something unexpected. A vessel contains things so they will not be lost - providing a safe place where thoughts, words, memories, experiences and the unspoken can be held.
Growing up in regional nsw on a farm, it was typical to have a pile of newspapers in a basket by the loo - some light reading. Newspapers were part of the fabric of life and the daily routine - what's in the paper today? A significant form of communication about the local community and world around us. We had our local daily paper, the sydney daily paper and on weekends two sydney papers as well as the land. The prevalence of newspaper for many of us has changed in the last decade or so, but the message is possibly more important today.
My use of newspaper as a material used in my work references the everyday. Sports, weather, headlines, community events, obituaries,... the daily news. In these times of 'fake news' it is especially important to value and maintain the freedom and impartiality of the press.
