encaustic mixed media - with a textiles sensibility
Encaustic painting is also known as hot wax painting. Encaustic medium is made by combining melted beeswax and damar resin (or castor wax) which makes it more durable. It is an ancient technique dating back to the ancient greeks. Medium is typically applied to wood surfaces in the liquid state and after application is fixed by heat. When cool, the surface is solid. Encaustic painting readily lends itself to mixed media applications and experimentation.
I frequently incorporate textile elements and techniques in my encaustic mixed media artworks. Stitch, printmaking, shibori, batik, etc are embedded in the aromatic layers of beeswax. I also incorporate knitted, woven and crocheted wire in my encaustic panels.
