textiles + fibre art: incorporating textile processes and techniquesI employ a broad and diverse range of techniques and textile processes in my art making practice.
Often drawing from my childhood and the world around me I create narrative works that give voice to matters that are of importance to me. My installations seek to foster environments that provide interactive and age inclusive experiences. I create indoor and outdoor site-specific works that embrace quiet contemplation, play, and reflection. Many of my works may at first appear to be decorative, but are frequently imbued with layered meaning. the importance of stitchMy textiles art practice consists of a number of broad and diverse applications that are unified by the use of stitch.
I frequently employ 'stitch' in my art practice. Stitch encompasses free machine embroidery to depict landscapes and contemporary 'still life' subject matter. I stitch with contemporary materials such as plastics, newsprint, paper (see works on paper). I incorporate stitch in my encaustic mixed media works (see encaustic). Hand stitch is also associated with the act of 'mending' and embroidery. In my work stitch is often used as a metaphor for healing and communication in addition to the traditional applications of making and embellishment/decoration of textile items, objects and garments. |
