batik - textile wall hanging
artist statement I grew up in the village of Kootingal on a farm and later my grandparent's property where they had stone fruit orchards. I was in primary school when I learned that Kootingal was an Aboriginal word meaning star. I remember thinking how special it was to have such a wonderful meaning to the place where I lived. One of my favourite things growing up and even now as an adult is going outside and lying on the grass gazing at the enormous star filled sky. There is nothing like it. There is no light pollution here like there is in the cities. The night sky is peaceful, an expansive ocean of stars - vast and unending in a rich deep inky blue universe. Stars twinkling in the moonlight I feel safe and secure in this special world under the heavens. I am home. |
