artist statement
My initial inspiration was based on the geometric multi-coloured plexiglass sculptures of Margo Lewer, and her interest in "...the reflection of movement, colour, forms, and of shadows induced by light."
Rigid structures are replaced with layers of fabric creating a fluid and portable stained-glass banner. the sheer fabrics glisten in the light, gently moving in the breeze. Kandinsky believed that colour caused the human soul to vibrate, that colour had the ability to put people in touch with their spiritual selves.
My heart is heavy. I struggle with how dark the world seems. I watch the destruction of centuries-old mosques and churches being targeted by the ceaseless bombing of Gaza. I see the Palestinian people constantly displaced, herded from their homes to locations lacking water, food, sanitation, and medical support. Abandoned by all but held strong in their deep faith.
Looking for light I have created this work as a symbol of hope, compassion, grief, love, faith, and devotion.

NOTE: This work was developed for the group exhibition 'Twelvefold' as a culmination of the inaugural Ancher Points: Emerging Artists Intensive (2023) to which I was a participant. The programme consisted of twelve artists from the Greater Western Sydney Region and was an initiative of Penrith Regional Gallery, NSW.
I am grateful for opportunities this programme has provided for the growth and development of my art practice. Exhibition dates 13 January - 28 April 2024. |
