batik - textile installation
artist statement
As children we would make forts and cubby houses under the dining room table out of bed sheets, blankets, and pillows. Once settled with our teddy bears and dolls and a pile of storybooks, we would listen to the children's albums my mother would play on the record player. Fairy Tales and Nursery Rhymes, Folk songs and stories all filling our imagination with faraway places and adventures in distant lands. By creating this installation space, I have sought to recreate those precious childhood memories filled with laughter and happiness which have been so pivotal to the development of many of the works I produce in my wearable art practice. The bedsheets are batik - wax painted imagery of childhood memories and adventures, climbing trees and picking fruit on the farm, chancing upon a red bellied black snake basking not he road, bugs from the garden, birds to share secrets with and a starry night with a crescent moon. I am indebted to my parents for fostering a love of books and storytelling and for encouraging my curious and inquisitive mind. This installation space is designed for public interaction. I invite you to crawl inside, find a book and listen to the stories from my childhood. |
